How to Prepare Product Samples for Photography in China

A practical checklist for getting clean, accurate, shoot-ready samples from your China supplier to a product photography studio.

Good product photography starts before the camera. If the sample is damaged, incomplete, or different from the final product, the final images can create problems for your Amazon listing, Shopify page, or launch campaign.

Treat the photography sample as a small production approval, not simply an item pulled from a carton. The camera will reveal scratches, dust, uneven printing, mold lines, fingerprints, loose seams, and color differences that may be less obvious during an ordinary warehouse inspection.

Sample Checklist

  • Send the newest production sample, not an early prototype.
  • Include all accessories, cables, inserts, labels, manuals, and packaging.
  • Confirm color, material, logo placement, and finish before shipping the sample.
  • Ask the supplier to protect glossy, transparent, or fragile surfaces during shipment.
  • Send dimensions, material notes, and any features that need to be shown clearly.
  • Include a simple product-use explanation if the function is not obvious.

If the product has a display, app, light, motor, battery, removable part, or assembly sequence, confirm that it works before dispatch. Include the correct charger, region-specific plug, batteries, tools, and spare consumable parts needed to demonstrate it.

Ask the Supplier to Photograph the Sample First

Before arranging delivery, ask the supplier for current phone photos of the exact sample, packaging, accessories, labels, and serial or model information. This simple check can catch an old logo, the wrong color, missing parts, or a damaged box before the item reaches the studio.

For products with several variants, label every unit clearly. The variant name used by the supplier should match the name used in the shot list and product page so files are not assigned to the wrong SKU.

Information to Send With the Sample

Send the product link, supplier photos, target sales channel, competitor examples, image requirements, launch deadline, and brand guidelines. If you have Amazon bullet points or Shopify product copy, share those too. They help the image set answer the same buyer questions as the product page.

Also include accurate dimensions, materials, product claims, safety limitations, and a list of details that must not be changed during retouching. If text will be added to Amazon listing images or A+ content, provide approved wording rather than asking the production team to infer technical claims from supplier materials.

Packaging and Surface Preparation

Send final packaging when packaging appears in the image set. Confirm barcodes, compliance marks, language versions, inserts, and printed colors. If final packaging is not ready, decide in advance whether temporary packaging should be excluded, photographed for later replacement, or recreated from approved artwork.

Glossy, chrome, transparent, black, and highly textured products often need more surface preparation and retouching. Ask the supplier to retain protective film during transport, but confirm whether it should be removed before photography. For textiles, send items folded or hung in a way that reduces permanent creases.

Common Problems to Avoid

Avoid sending incomplete samples, wrong packaging, old logo versions, missing accessories, or products with visible scratches. If the product is still changing, tell the studio which details are final and which details may need retouching or later replacement.

Do not assume the studio knows how the product is assembled or used. A short demonstration video from the supplier can prevent incorrect installation, unrealistic hand positions, or a lifestyle scene that misrepresents the function.

After the Shoot

Decide before production whether the sample should be returned, stored for future updates, sent to another China-based partner, or disposed of. Return shipping, storage, batteries, liquids, and regulated products may require separate arrangements.
